Abia Assembly Summons Commissioner for Homeland Security
The Abia State House of Assembly has invited the Commissioner for Homeland security to appear before it at plenary on Tuesday, 21st June, 2022.
The Speaker Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji who announced the resolution after entertaining a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by the member Representing Aba South State Constituency, Hon. Obinna Ichita.
Ichita in his motion decried the incessant kidnapping and killings going on in the state citing example of the recent attacks and kidnapp of the Methodist Prelate along Umunneochi area of Abia State as despicable.
Ichita stressed that they cannot keep quite as lawmakers in the 7th Assembly while citizens find it difficult to go about their lawful businesses without the fear of being kidnapped.
Hon. Ichita therefore prayed the house as a matter of urgency to invite the state commissioner of Police, the State Director of Security Services and Brigade Commander of the Army in Ohafia to come and explain to them what is happening in the state.
In their different contributions, the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, who represents Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency stated that the ministry of Homeland Security in the state should be queried, stressing that the issue at hand falls under their purview. According to him, they should be able to tell us to what extent they have gone to arrest the situation.
On the other hand Hon. Ginger Onwusibe representing the people of Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency vehemently noted that the homeland security agency created was not properly funded and empowered to function effectively with any vehicles and other equipment to work and also have not been paid .
He stressed the need for Government to be responsible and responsive to pay/ fund the establishment they created so they can help in tackling the security challenges of the state.
Hon. AC Thomas Nkoro of Obingwa West State Constituency is calling on the National Assembly to take steps towards amendments of the Constitution to create state police saying that unfolded events shows that creating local security outfits has failed.
Other members are of the opinion that Homeland Security should work with the local vigilante group to arrest the issues of kidnapping in the state.

HAB: 56 The Abia State Food Bank Bill, 2022 and
HAB 55: The Abia State Tele- Health Care Agency Bill 2022, respectively scaled through their first readings.
The House adjourned plenary to reconvene on Wednesday, the 15th of June, 2022.
