The Ochiagha ,Oparaukwu Ibeku,Prince Benjamin Apugo has described new yam festival as an event with rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people which cannot be celebrated in a foreign country.
Apugo stated this while performing the traditional rights during the Ibeku Ancient Kingdom’s new yam celebration at his residence , further expressing total disappointment over the way and manner some people from the South East abuse the Igbo culture.
The traditional ruler maintained that one of the ways to solidify the Igbo culture is to emulate the way Yorubas and Hausas value their traditions.
Ochiagha further disclosed that he performs the necessary traditional rituals to usher in the new yam celebration as a consequence of inheritance, adding that only those who had attained the eligible status are allowed to administer the traditional rites in the festival which according to him had lasted for more than 1500 years in Ibeku land.
He also said, it will be good for every household in the South East to embark on Agriculture so as to ensure food sufficiency and employment opportunities.
